The Postage Meter: Saving Money And Time
Businesses that send out mail in volume can benefit from using a postage meter, a device that prints an indicia, or printed mark that is equal to the use of a stamp. The look of this type of postage is sharper, easier, and can save the business money. After determining if a business can benefit from its use, there are only a few places that are authorized to sell the meters.
If a business spends more than fifty dollars in postage each month, they would find the usage of a postage meter beneficial. To determine which type is best for any particular company, three questions should be asked. The first question is how much money the business spends mailing items out every month. The volume of mail on an average day and busiest day should be considered as well. Lastly, a business should ask themselves about the variety of items normally sent.
All postage meters can hold $1000 total in postage, and can send first class, priority and express mail. In addition, meters can also send out packages. Meters can send out bulk mailings as well, but this must be approved via application from the United States Postal Service. The optional features also include being password-protected, accounting codes, automatic postage reset and date advance, and saved presets. Security can be given to mailings by using a digital meter that uses two-dimensional bar codes.
Postage meters can be leased from only a handful of companies. These would include Francotyp-Postalia Inc., Neopost, Pitney Bowes Inc., PSI Systems Envelope Manager, Stamps.com, and Hasler, Inc.
There are four pieces that make up the postage meter. Three of the pieces - a feeder, sealer, and stacker - are self-explanatory. The tape dispenser is used when a particular piece of mail won't fit through the unit. The postage is then printed on a tape, similar to a label.
A postage scale must be used as well to determine the proper postage rate determined by the United States Postal Service. The different rates are figured by the weight of each item for each different postal class. Getting the correct rate figured out beforehand saves from applying too much postage when the actual rate is in doubt. Spring scales can determine any rate for the United States Postal Service, but digital scales can also determine rates for FedEx and UPS.
Any company that decides to use a postage meter will be thankful in the long run. They will spend less money and speed up the process of mailing out letters and packages. In the process, the company's mailed items will also have a much more professional look.
