It is said that even businesses that send very minimal amounts of mail can benefit from have a postage meter. There is also the added benefit of taking the "guess-work" out of deciding how much postage a package needs. Most people tend to over-estimate, and provide more postage than was actually necessary, so a postage meter could save a business money by providing the actual required postage for the weight/size of the package.

Additionally, digital postal meters can provide the extra added benefit of printing a bar code that will identify not only the destination of the package, but the sender as well. Also, digital postal meters can also be re-programmed electronically, so that they can compensate for any changes in the US postal rate automatically. The basic meters will require an upgraded chip that will re-format the meter to recognize the correct postage.

The more complex meters will run about 100-200 dollars a month. Keep in mind this is the price to lease the meter only, postage will need to be purchased separately. Also, any necessary upgrades to a rented postage meter will also create additional cost.
It is also important to note that scales for weight determination of larger packages are also a separate purchase. These can be leased along with the postage meter, or bought separately, as they do not fall under federal regulations.
