The Facts About Postage Stamps

Postage stamps are the most commonly used form of US postage by the regular consumer. Postage stamps are required to be placed on first-class mail in order to complete delivery of the item to the intended recipient.

If the postage paid for the delivery is insufficient, or was not paid at all, the piece of correspondence may still be forwarded to the recipient, with the requirement of paying either the whole postage or the difference due. If the recipient is unwilling to pay, the piece of correspondence is returned to the original sender, with the notification of postage due to complete the transaction.

Postage stamps started out as a relatively uniform item. They were rectangular in shape and required moistening of the back of the stamp to adhere it to a surface. Of course, since stamps were first introduced, there have been quite a few changes. Stamps come in several different shapes now, including circles, triangle and even pentagon-like shapes. They also come in different sizes.

Additionally, stamps have evolved to incorporate all sorts of different pictures and themes on them. Stamps are available at major holidays with certain themes, such as Easter, Christmas, Valentine's Day and many others. Stamps have also been designed to honor certain people and places and releasing of collector editions of certain types of stamps has occurred quite frequently.

The other interesting feature about stamps is that they provide the opportunity to contribute to your community. Certain types of stamps are advertised to be supporting a certain cause and when those stamps are purchased, they are slightly above the regular price of stamps at the time. The difference is donated to the cause that the stamps are supporting. It is a very advantageous way to take a required daily activity and give people a chance to contribute to society.

Stamps have become the focus of some recent controversy in that there have been two postage price increases for stamps in a relatively short period of time. Stamps are now 39 cents a piece to purchase. It is felt that this increase is based on the decreasing volume of hard copy mail that is being sent, due to electronic advancements. With on-line banking and email, sending bills and letters through the mail has taken a huge decline, and it seems that the effort to make up for lack of volume is to increase individual stamp prices.
