Postage Stamp Art - Beautiful And Historical


When we see a stamp on an envelope or card that looks different than the ones sold in the big rolls at the post office, we pay attention, but not for too long. We admire the beauty of it and move on. Yet this isn't just another stamp; it's postage stamp art. What better way to reach more people with your art than by placing it on a stamp that gets placed on envelopes or cards, and that will be seen by every person that touches it from the sender of the mail to the recipient?

Postage stamp art, at times also called artistamps, has become a very important part of our culture, and vice versa. Everything that has an influence in America eventually finds its way to gracing a postage stamp. This can include everything from famous people, famous landmarks and even every different type of art. The first postage stamps were issued in 1847, and since the 1860s and 1870s people have collected them and admired them for what they are * art.

Approximately 40,000 pieces of art are submitted to the United States Postal Service each year, with the artist's hopes that they may find their art on cards and envelopes across the country. Yet, only thirty-five of them actually make it as actually faces of postage stamps, being chosen by the fifteen members of the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee.

Postage Stamp Art has become such a unique way to view art, that here are now museum and gallery shows dedicated to them. The very first showing of postage stamp art was in 1974 in Barnaby, British Columbia. This unique art even found its way to its own museum, the National Postal Museum, within the famous Smithsonian Institution.

And now, there is even a game that celebrates this special art form * The Patriot Challenge. Since nearly every piece of Americana has been reflected in postage stamps, what better way to celebrate and pay homage to America than playing a board game that revolves around identifying stamps? Players move around a board answering questions about America and its stamps. It's a perfect activity for families and schools.

Postage stamp art is an art that everyone displays, honors, and uses every day. They just don't realize it since it is so ingrained within our daily lives and history. It is both beautiful and historical, and not many art forms can make that claim.
