Postage Stamp Supplies
As Simple Or Involved As You Want When working on a stamp collection, postage stamp supplies can be either as simple or as involved as the collection itself. Only the simplest of items can be purchased, or the supplies can get very involved. It becomes a very versatile hobby, dependent upon what you put into it.
The first item to be considered when purchasing supplies is a stamp catalog. This can not only keep you informed of the many stamps out there, but can also help you keep informed of the different values of stamps. With a picture of each stamp, there will be a listing with varieties, method of printing, and denomination.
The albums a postage stamp collection are put it can be as simple as a three-ring binder that you can pick up for a few dollars at any store, or specific albums meant for the sole purpose of collecting stamps. These can either be collected all in one album, or in separate collections, such as by location * United States, Canada and World, or by subject matter.
For the insides of the albums, you will need blank pages and sheets to insert as your collection grows. You will also need hinges. These will let you peel the stamp off your album to change, move or inspect it, unlike tape or glue. They are made from a small piece of plastic and are sticky on only one side.
To build a more involved collection, you will need items like glassine envelopes or interleaves and protective stamp mounts. Glassine is a special type of paper that is sheer. There are glassine envelopes to store the stamps in until being mounted and interleaves that can be placed in the album.
When inspecting and moving your stamps, you will need a variety of different items. The most easily identified with stamp collecting are a magnifying glass and tongs for the most obvious of reasons. A perforation gauge can be used to check the distance between each perforation. Watermark trays and fluid can be used as well to detect the watermark on the paper that the stamp was printed on. These can help when differentiating between different stamps that appear similar at first glance. An ultra-violet lamp can sometimes help with this as well.
Looking at all the different postage stamp supplies can appear daunting at first, between the catalogs, albums, mounts, gauges, envelopes, etc. Yet once the need of each item is understood, getting started with the hobby of collecting postage stamps can be quite easy.
