The Facts About Us Postage
US postage is responsible for providing the guidelines and costs for sending any form of mailed correspondence in the US. There are several different types of US postage, along with several different options for sending mail and/or packages through the US postal service.
The most common form of US postage is the US postage stamp. Stamps are used on all types of correspondence, when simple first-class mail services are being used. Stamps can be purchased in a variety of ways: individually, in a book (containing 20), or in a larger roll. Stamps cost 39 cents a piece. The price was recently increased from 37 cents. Any 37 cent stamps that remain must have additional 1 cent stamps added to the envelope to deliver the mail without further payment being required.
If the piece of correspondence being sent is a too big to be sent in the regular mail or a large package, there are other ways to purchase US postage to allow the package to be delivered. The US postal service provides detailed information on their website about how much a transaction will cost, based on package size, and how quickly the package needs to delivered. Basic mail delivery, usually ranging from 2-3 days, will run from about 1 dollar up to about 11 dollars, given the size of the package. If overnight delivery is necessary the cost can be up to 19 dollars.
There are also other mail delivery options that are offered through the US postal service. Mail can be sent certified, which means that it cannot be left with the regular mail, a person must either actively accept it, or sign to allow the piece of correspondence to be left with no one present. Signature requested is also an option, if it is absolutely necessary to physically hand the piece of correspondence to someone. In this case, the sender will include an additional form on top of the piece of correspondence that the receiver must sign. This signed verification of receipt is then forwarded back to the sender, so they are informed of the receipt of the correspondence.
US postage is very versatile and allows for the ability to send any type of mail, in the most convenient ways possible. US postage is still rather reasonable, and remains competitive with privately owned shipping services, both in price and options for sending.
